Student and Parent Expectations

Student and Parent Expectations

Lesson Preparation

Students agree to arrive at each lesson punctually, well prepared, and with their assignment books and music. Students agree to listen attentively, follow my instructions, and ask questions until they understand what they are working on. Students should feel free to share with me any particular goals or desires they have regarding their piano study. Students agree to practice 6 days a week and complete the assignments given to them.

Practice Expectations

Piano study is a daily commitment. Please ensure that your child has a good instrument to practice on, and time in their schedule 6 days a week to complete their practicing assignments. Younger students will need a parent to sit next to them and help them practice each day. As students mature, parents can gradually decrease their level of involvement, but will always need to monitor progress and make sure assignments are being completed. I do not require a specific amount of time each day, as consistency and quality is much more important than quantity. As a general guideline, beginning students should expect to practice 15-30 minutes a day, and the time will increase as they progress. Intermediate students will likely need closer to 45 minutes, and advanced students should be at the piano 1+ hours a day to see continued progress.

Performances and Competitions

Performing is an important part of developing musicianship, artistry, and confidence. If possible, I encourage participation in the following events, performances, and competitions (see calendar):

Group Students

August Summer Recital
December Christmas Recital
May Spring Recital

Private Students

September Performance Evaluations
October Federation Ensemble/Concerto Festival
November Sandy UMTA Piano Festival
December Christmas Recital
February AIM Theory/Ear Training Testing
March AIM Performance/Technique/Sight-Reading

Federation Solo Festival
May Spring Recital

Salt Lake Piano Competition
August Summer Recital

If group performances are prohibited by pandemic conditions, then I will have students record videos for Youtube in lieu of recitals. Most judged events and festivals can still be held online.

These performances and festivals are not strictly required, but strongly encouraged. Please check the studio calendar and plan ahead for these events. If you have a conflict, please let me know well ahead of time. When students work very hard to prepare for a performance, it is quite disappointing when a last-minute obligation deprives them of the opportunity to perform. Pieces should be memorized 3-4 weeks before the recital/competition date. Students should do at least 5 practice performances before each recital, one of which will be our studio performance class (1-2 weeks before the recital or competition).

Parent Involvement

In my experience, the most important factor in determining a student’s success is involved and supportive parents. I believe in maintaining mutual respect between teacher, student, and parents. I work hard to develop the type of relationship with each student that will make him feel encouraged, motivated, and inspired, and expect parents to respect and support me in this endeavor. Open and honest communication between all parties is essential.

I encourage parents to develop a healthy and positive routine facilitating their child's daily practice regime. Parents should guide their children in choosing a consistent practice schedule, and coach them in using the problem solving skills and effective practicing techniques I have taught them in lessons. Practicing can be tricky and frustrating for the student at times. I teach my students that success is achieved through dedication and hard work (not merely talent), and I hope that parents will reinforce this growth mindset at home.
