My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that all students can excel in their music study if they put the right kind of effort into it. I maintain high expectations of my students and teach with a growth mindset, to help every student reach their greatest potential. I believe that studying music is valuable simply for its artistic merit, but also for so many other reasons: developing discipline, grit, determination, perseverance, attention to detail, focus, overcoming difficulties, performing under pressure....I could go on! I love working with my students to help them develop into excellent musicians and people!

About Private Lessons

I teach private lessons to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of any age, in 45-minute lessons once a week. In private lessons each week we will focus on three main areas of study:

  1. An integrated study of technique, theory, ear training, and improvisation.
  2. Note reading, rhythm skills, and sight-reading skills.
  3. Literature (Classical focus), effective practicing techniques, artistry, and performance skills.

Private students also participate in group classes once each term, during which we practice performing, play games to reinforce theory topics and ear training, and do ensemble playing, group improvisation, and composition. These classes are also a time for students to get to know each other and make friends in the studio.

Private students perform in 5-8 recitals, festivals, and competitions throughout the year. During pandemic conditions, recitals are replaced by Zoom or Youtube performances, and festivals and competitions are held online.

Monthly tuition is $195/month, based on 11 lessons per 3-month term. Plan on approximately $50-$100 per year for books and materials. Many private students also participate in 2-3 festivals or competitions each year. These events usually require a $20-50 fee to participate.
